The Slow Readers Club

The Slow Readers Club - Only headline show in 2026!

The Slow Readers Club are a British indie band formed in Manchester in 2009, consisting of Aaron Starkie (vocals), Kurtis Starkie (guitar), James Ryan (bass) and David Whitworth (drums). Known for their brooding synth textures, driving rhythms and emotionally direct songwriting, the band have built a reputation as one of the UK’s most compelling independent acts.
Drawing on Manchester’s rich alternative heritage while forging a distinct identity of their own, their sound blends post-punk intensity with electronic atmospherics and anthemic, communal choruses. Early releases steadily built a loyal grassroots following, powered by word-of-mouth momentum and immersive live performances that balance dark lyrical themes with moments of uplift.
Their self-titled debut album introduced a cinematic, shadow-edged style. Breakthrough record Build A Tower propelled the band into the UK Top 20, cementing their commercial arrival, while The Joy of the Return expanded their sonic palette and emotional scope and hit the UK top 10. Writing often about modern anxieties, technology, power and the human condition, their lyrics combine introspection with defiance.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, the band wrote and recorded 91 Days in Isolation entirely remotely, capturing a sense of distance and reflection without losing their trademark urgency. They followed it with Knowledge Freedom Power, an album that sharpened their electronic edge while maintaining their emotional intensity.
In 2025, they released their seventh studio album, Out of a Dream, reaching No.11 on the UK Albums Chart. The album further refined their blend of synth-driven drama and soaring melody, showcasing a band confident in both their sound and their independence.
Renowned for their powerful live shows and close connection with their audience, The Slow Readers Club continue to evolve while staying true to the emotional core that defines them — music that confronts uncertainty but finds catharsis in shared experience
