Sunday 6th July - Saturday 12th July

The Picturedrome is an official fringe venue for the Holmfirth Art Week.
We will be presenting the "Holme Valley Lads", plus metal sculptures by Mick Kirkby-Geddis.

Mick Kirkby-Geddes

Mick Kirkby-Geddes is a sculptor who uses everyday objects and scrap metal to create his own personal style of work. He has a very keen eye for finding interesting forms within what most people would regard as junk. He then transforms these shapes into new and fascinating objects, which have included figures, animals, insects, clocks, gates, railings and flowers. "It gives them a different slant and hopefully a touch of humour".

The Holme Valley Lads

We are presenting original World War One recruitment posters for the Holmfirth and Huddersfield area and 31 photographs of young men from the Holme Valley area who had joined up various regiments to go off and fight. They styled themselves “The Holme Valley Lads”. On one poster they are all shown on horseback appealing to other young men to “Fall in and join the ride to Berlin”.

These original photographs were found hidden away in a disused loft (that now houses the new projection room) here at The Picturedrome. Inside it was a box that looked as if it had lain there undisturbed for at least sixty years, possibly more.

The pictures are in excellent condition and all of the men’s names and Regiments are clearly marked on each one. Local historians are now busily researching Army and other archives to determine what became of these young men during the Great War. An appeal is also going out to families in the Holme Valley and Huddersfield area to come and view all of the photographs and posters which are being put on display at the Holmfirth Picturedrome during Holmfirth “Art Week”, which runs from 5th – 12 July.
